The Drentsche Hoofdvaart (sometimes spelled Drentse Hoofdvaart) is the connecting canal in the province of Drenthe, running between the Meppelerdiep and the Reest in Meppel and the Noord-Willems Canal near Assen. For almost half of its length, the canal is flanked on both sides by the ribbon-shaped village of Smilde.
