he Meppelerdiep is a canal that runs from Meppel to Zwartsluis, where it flows into the Zwarte Water. The Meppelerdiep forms the lower course of three small rivers (namely the Wold Aa, the Reest, and the Beilerstroom) and was originally a natural waterway, formerly called the Sethe. The name Sethe can still be found in the Gemaal Zedemuden (Zedemuden Pumping Station), which was named after a settlement that disappeared into the waves at the mouth of the Sethe. The name also appears in the Sethehaven (Sethe Harbor), located along the Meppelerdiep. Today, the Meppelerdiep connects the Drentsche Hoofdvaart and the Hoogeveense Vaart (two canals of some importance for navigation) with the IJsselmeer and plays an important role in water management in Drenthe.
