Description
Chelidoperca pleurospilus is a small marine fish from the family Serranidae, known as the sidespotted perchlet.
It is distributed across the Indo–West Pacific, including the Andaman Sea, eastern Indian region, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, southern Japan, and both northwestern and northeastern Australia.
The species is demersal and lives close to the sea floor, typically on sandy-muddy bottoms or along coral slopes of the continental shelf. It is usually found at depths between about 25 and 200 metres, with most records coming from deeper areas around 80–200 metres.
The fish has an elongated body with large eyes and a pink to orange coloration. Along its sides it usually displays four or five distinct dark oval spots, which are characteristic for identifying the species. The upper lobe of the tail fin is often slightly pointed or extended.
The maximum recorded size is around 13 centimetres standard length.
