Description
Chelidoperca hirundinacea is a small tropical marine fish that lives in the deeper zones of the western Pacific.
It inhabits demersal environments and is typically found between 80 and 200 meters.
The species prefers soft-bottom habitats and occurs mainly on sandy-mud or sandy-silt substrates along the continental shelf and the shelf edge. These conditions provide both shelter and feeding opportunities in the low-light, deeper waters it occupies.
Its distribution extends from Japan southward through Indonesia and as far as Papua New Guinea. In these regions it is sometimes regarded as a minor food fish, although it is generally not of significant commercial importance due to its small size and deeper habitat.
Chelidoperca hirundinacea reaches a maximum recorded standard length of about 16.2 centimeters.
The species feeds within the benthic zone, where it moves close to the bottom in search of suitable prey. Overall, it is a characteristic shelf-dwelling perchlet of the tropical western Pacific, known for occupying deeper soft-bottom habitats and forming part of the diverse demersal fish communities in that region.
