The Mendota Canal is situated on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, connecting the eastern end of Lac La Belle to Bete Grise Bay, which is an arm of Lake Superior. The canal was constructed by the Lac La Belle Harbor Improvement Company to allow ore boats and other vessels to travel between the mines near Lac La Belle and the open waters of Lake Superior.
