Description
The Tucuruí Dam is built on the Tocantins River in the state of Pará, Brazil. The reservoir (artificial lake) created by the dam is often called Lago Tucuruí. The outflow from the Tucuruí reservoir is the continued flow of water through the Tocantins River — the dam releases water downstream via its turbines, spillways, and outlets. In simple terms: water enters from upstream Tocantins River flows into the reservoir, and then water is discharged out the dam back into the Tocantins River. The dam’s spillway and controlled outlets determine how much water is released, which fluctuates depending on rainfall, inflow, hydroelectric generation needs, flood control, etc.
