Description
The souffia is found in Europe where it occurs in rivers draining into the Gulf of Lion, the Hérault, including the Rhône, to the Var River draining into the Ligurian Sea. It the occurs in the Soča river in northeastern Italy and western Slovenia which drains into the Adriatic Sea. It is also found in the catchments of the upper Rhine and the Danube from Switzerland and Germany east to the Tisza drainage in Romania and Ukraine.
This is a gregarious species of cool, flowing, well-oxygenated rivers and streams, avoiding the lowland stretches.
