Serranus inexpectatus is a small tropical marine fish belonging to the sea bass family. It inhabits reef-associated habitats at depths of 25–36 m, where it lives close to rocky and reef environments. The species is known from the eastern central Atlantic, with confirmed records from Senegal, Gabon, and Angola, and possible occurrence in Sierra Leone.
Reaching a maximum length of 9.2 cm (total length), Serranus inexpectatus can be identified by its compressed, fusiform body, ten dorsal spines, and a distinctive black blotch between the third and fourth dorsal-fin spines. Its body is marked with six broad dark bands, making it distinguishable from other species of the genus.
