Description
The hairy toadfish (Batrachoides liberiensis) is a demersal species inhabiting marine and brackish environments of the tropical eastern Atlantic. It is most commonly found in shallow coastal and littoral waters, usually from the shoreline down to about 30 meters, though it has been recorded at depths of up to 100 meters.
The species has a geographic range extending from Senegal southward to Mangue Grande in Angola, occurring roughly between 14°N and 17°S, and it regularly enters estuaries where salinity conditions fluctuate.
This toadfish is an epibenthic predator, spending much of its time resting on or partly buried in soft substrates. Its diet consists mainly of smaller fish and shrimps, which it ambushes at close range. Individuals reach sexual maturity at lengths starting around 12 cm, although the upper size at maturity is not well documented.
The hairy toadfish can grow relatively large for the family, attaining a maximum recorded total length of about 46 cm.
