Description
The Warmbach (also known as Zillerbach) is the thermal-waters outflow from the Warmbad Villach spa facility, continuously flowing at around 24 °C year-round due to geothermal springs. It hosts a unique aquatic ecosystem where tropical and subtropical aquarium fish thrive—thanks to illegally released species like cichlids, guppies, neon fish, plecos, and even red swamp crayfish. Over 50 fish species, including more than ten cichlid species, were documented in a master's thesis.. The city of Villach launched the "Naturwunder Warmbach" initiative, featuring four interpretive stations along a scenic path with benches and info panels about local flora and fauna. Early in the creek, where waters are warm, you’ll see exotic fish like guppies, mollies, angelfish, and plecos. Downstream, where the cold-water Kaltbach merges, the temperature drops and native species such as grayling, barbel, nase, and brown trout appear, along with dragonflies, frogs, grass snakes, and birds like orioles and grey herons.
