Istokpoga Canal

Istokpoga Canal is a freshwater canal in Highlands County, Florida, United States. It serves as the primary outlet of Lake Istokpoga, carrying water eastward to the Kissimmee River. Constructed as part of Florida's flood control and water management system, the canal plays a vital role in regulating lake levels, reducing flood risk, and supplying water to downstream ecosystems. Water flow is controlled by the G-85 water control structure at the eastern end of Lake Istokpoga.

The canal was created by channelizing the historic Istokpoga Creek, which originally drained the lake into the Kissimmee River. Today, it forms an important hydrological link within the Kissimmee River watershed. Water leaving Lake Istokpoga flows through the Istokpoga Canal into the Kissimmee River, continues to Lake Okeechobee, and ultimately reaches the Gulf of Mexico through the Everglades and Florida Bay.

Although primarily designed for water management, the Istokpoga Canal is also a popular fishing destination. It is especially known for Florida Bass (Micropterus salmoides), which is native to this region. Other commonly caught species include Black Crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), Redear Sunfish (Lepomis microlophus), Chain Pickerel (Esox niger), Bowfin (Amia calva), and Florida Gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus). Fishing is often most productive when water is flowing through the canal, concentrating fish near the control structure.

Because it connects one of Florida's premier bass lakes with the Kissimmee River, the Istokpoga Canal is important both for regional water management and recreational fishing. Its productive waters and convenient public access make it a popular destination for anglers throughout the year.
