Ten Mile Pond is a 3,755‑acre wild wetland area composed of multiple managed pools and moist soil units rather than one discrete natural lake. Water levels are actively manipulated through wells, pumps, levees, and water control structures to support wildlife habitat, especially waterfowl. The area lies on old floodplain land and is intentionally flooded or drained seasonally depending on management goals and river levels. Ten Mile Pond relies on water control structures and a network of ditches, including the nearby “Ten Mile Ditch,” to manage water exchange. During high Mississippi River stages, water can back into the area via the ditch and pumps from the river, making the hydrology connected to the Mississippi River floodplain.
