Lake Ophelia lies in east‑central Louisiana. The Wildlife Refuge named after the lake covers about 17,500 acres and was established to protect and restore floodplain and wetland habitat. The lake itself is around 350 acres — a permanently flooded, cypress‑lined waterbody. Lake Ophelia was once a former channel of the nearby Red River of the South before shifts in the river’s course left it isolated as a backwater lake.
