Description
Lago Caño Negro is the central feature of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge (Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Mixto Caño Negro), nestled in northern Costa Rica near the Nicaraguan border, in Alajuela Province—about 20 km south of Los Chiles and near Upala. The lagoon spans approximately 800 hectares, formed by the Frío and Mónico Rivers. Its water level varies seasonally—expanding during the rainy season and fragmenting into lagoons and channels in the dry.
