Lake Arbuckle is a natural freshwater lake in Highlands County, Florida, United States. Covering approximately 3,800 acres (15.4 km²), it is located within the Arbuckle Wildlife Management Area and is one of the most scenic and least developed lakes in central Florida. The lake is the headwaters of Arbuckle Creek, which flows south into Lake Istokpoga, making it part of the Kissimmee River watershed. Most of the surrounding shoreline remains in a natural state, providing valuable habitat for fish and wildlife.
Lake Arbuckle is a popular destination for freshwater anglers and is best known for its excellent fishing for Florida Bass (Micropterus salmoides). Other commonly caught species include Black Crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), Redear Sunfish (Lepomis microlophus), Chain Pickerel (Esox niger), Bowfin (Amia calva), and Florida Gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus). Trophy-sized Florida Bass are caught regularly, making the lake one of the premier bass fisheries in central Florida.
The lake is relatively shallow and features extensive aquatic vegetation, lily pads, marshes, and cypress-lined shorelines that provide ideal habitat for fish and other aquatic wildlife. A public boat ramp and campground offer convenient access for anglers, while the surrounding Arbuckle Wildlife Management Area provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching, paddling, and wildlife observation.
Thanks to its largely undeveloped shoreline, diverse fish community, and peaceful natural setting, Lake Arbuckle is considered one of Florida's hidden freshwater fishing gems. It attracts anglers throughout the year seeking quality fishing in a pristine environment.
