Description
The Kromme Rijn is a small river in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. It branches off from the Nederrijn near Wijk bij Duurstede. From there, it flows northwest through towns like Bunnik and Utrecht. Length: About 28 km long. Mouth: In the city of Utrecht, it historically split further into the Vecht, Oude Rijn, and Vaartsche Rijn, which carried water toward the North Sea. Historical importance: In Roman times, the Kromme Rijn was the main branch of the Rhine river flowing through Utrecht and continuing as the Oude Rijn to Katwijk at the North Sea. Over time, sedimentation reduced its importance.
