Wax Lake Outlet is a man-made channel completed in 1942. It diverts part of the Atchafalaya River’s flow directly to the Gulf of Mexico, reducing flood risk in Morgan City and surrounding areas. It carries freshwater and sediment southward from the Atchafalaya River through Wax Lake and empties into Atchafalaya Bay (near the Gulf).
