The Canal from Ghent to Terneuzen is a waterway that connects the city of Ghent in Belgium to the Western Scheldt via the North Sea locks, giving the city a direct connection to the North Sea. The canal flows into Terneuzen, just a few hundred meters from the Western Scheldt Tunnel. The canal passes through three municipalities: Ghent and Zelzate in Belgium, and the Dutch municipality of Terneuzen. The canal is of vital importance to the economy of Ghent. It connects the Port of Ghent — the third-largest port in Belgium (after Antwerp and Bruges-Zeebrugge) — with the sea.
