The Canale Maestro della Chiana is an artificial canal built by order of the Republic of Florence in 1338 to start the reclamation of the Val di Chiana , which was immediately slowed down by the construction of the Chiusa dei Monaci in this canal (dug into the rock), resumed by Cosimo I de' Medici in the 16th century and continued in the following centuries, especially after the agreements between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal State which facilitated the great reclamation of the 18th - 19th centuries within which the Canale Maestro was brought by the engineer Alessandro Manetti in the direction of Valiano and Lake Montepulciano (connected to Lake Chiusi by a communication canal and fed by tributaries among which the Tresa torrent stands out), from which it originates today, thanks to powerful embankments and the Right and Left Attachments, having always been progressively improved, even in the 20th century .
