Phu Ninh Reservoir (Ho Phu Ninh)

Phu Ninh Reservoir (Vietnamese: Hồ Phú Ninh) is a large artificial lake in Quảng Nam Province, central Vietnam, about 7 km southwest of Tam Kỳ.

Created by the construction of the Phu Ninh Dam on the Tam Ky River, the reservoir is one of the country's most important irrigation and water supply projects. It stores approximately 344 million cubic meters of water and has a surface area of about 3,433 hectares (34.3 km²). The reservoir supplies water for agriculture, domestic use, flood control, and small-scale hydropower generation.

Construction of the reservoir began in 1977, shortly after the reunification of Vietnam. Water impoundment started in 1980, and the project was officially completed in 1986. The reservoir was designed to irrigate more than 23,000 hectares of farmland across Quảng Nam Province, greatly improving agricultural production in the region.

Surrounded by rolling hills and protected forests, Phu Ninh Reservoir is renowned for its scenic landscape. The lake contains more than 30 islands and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including many native fish species. Nearby hot mineral springs and the surrounding forests have also made the reservoir a popular destination for ecotourism, boating, fishing, and nature observation.

Besides its economic importance, Phu Ninh Reservoir plays a vital role in protecting water resources and biodiversity in central Vietnam. The surrounding watershed supports extensive natural forests and serves as an important habitat for numerous plant and animal species, contributing to both regional conservation efforts and sustainable development.
